Mental Health Stereotypes in Media

The controversial cover that ran in Vogue Portugal this summer depicted a seriously negative stereotype of the mentally ill and an inaccurate representation of the mental health care. People who seek out assistance in dealing with their mental health struggles despite a culture that stigmatizes this are very courageous. Irresponsibly displaying mental health patients as shocking taboo  discourages people from seeking help and improving their health.

The reality of mental health care couldn’t be further from this depiction. The majority of mental health patients are living independently and contributing to the well being of their families and communities. Some patients do find themselves in a furious fight with their mental health that demands more support. Unlike the bleak image on this Vogue cover, we would like these patients to receive that support from individuals who are caring, comforting, thoughtfully accommodating, and dedicated to their mental and physical well being.
