For individuals who haven't found enough relief from traditional mental health treatments, Professional Psychiatric Services offers two ketamine-based treatment options: IV ketamine infusion therapy and SPRAVATO® (esketamine) nasal spray.
While both treatments work on the brain's glutamate system and may provide an option for people with treatment-resistant depression, they are different treatments with different administration methods and treatment protocols. Your PPS provider can help determine which option may be appropriate for you.
1. IV Ketamine Infusion Therapy
IV ketamine therapy involves administering a carefully controlled dose of ketamine intravenously in a supervised clinical setting.
Ketamine infusions have been studied as an option for individuals experiencing treatment-resistant depression and other mental health conditions. At PPS, IV ketamine treatment is administered under the supervision of our clinical team.
What to expect:

Ketamine is administered through an IV in a comfortable, supervised setting.

Each infusion typically lasts approximately 40 minutes.

Treatment plans are individualized based on your needs and response to treatment.

2. SPRAVATO® (Esketamine) Nasal Spray
SPRAVATO® (esketamine) is a prescription nasal spray approved by the FDA for adults with treatment-resistant depression.
Unlike IV ketamine, SPRAVATO® is administered as a nasal spray rather than through an IV. Because patients can experience temporary sedation, dissociation, or other effects after treatment, patients are monitored in the healthcare setting following administration.

Who May Benefit from Ketamine-Based Treatment?
Ketamine-based treatments may be considered for people who have not experienced adequate improvement with traditional treatments. Treatment options depend on your diagnosis, symptoms, medical history, current medications, and other individual factors.

Is SPRAVATO® the same as ketamine?
No. SPRAVATO® contains esketamine, which is one of the two molecules that make up ketamine. While the medications are related, SPRAVATO® is a distinct prescription medication administered as a nasal spray.
What is the difference between IV ketamine and SPRAVATO®?
The biggest differences are the medication, method of administration, and treatment protocols. IV ketamine is administered intravenously, while SPRAVATO® is administered as a nasal spray under medical supervision.
